Define the product and production model
State whether you need finished wholesale collections, cut-make-trim production, full-package manufacturing, private label, or small-batch development. Provide technical packs, size ranges, target materials, colours, quantities, target cost, delivery market, and launch date. Clarify whether the supplier must source fabric, trims, packaging, and labels.
Evaluate relevant capability
Ask for examples made with similar materials and construction. Review equipment, pattern-making, grading, cutting, sewing, knitting, finishing, printing or embroidery, and packing. Capacity should be assessed for the required product, not only by total factory size. Confirm which operations are subcontracted and how they are controlled.
Approve materials, fit, and workmanship
Use named or coded fabric and trim samples, measurement charts, tolerance rules, colour standards, and a sealed approval sample. For clothing and footwear, evaluate fit across the intended size range. Define inspection points for seams, finish, colour, measurements, labeling, packaging, and performance tests where appropriate.
Understand MOQ and production timing
Minimums may be driven by fabric mills, dye lots, leather, components, or packaging rather than sewing capacity. Ask for MOQ by colour, size, style, and total order. Build time for sample rounds, material purchase, pre-production approval, manufacturing, inspection, and transport. Seasonal deadlines need realistic buffers.
Start with a controlled pilot
A trial order helps both sides test communication, quality, timing, packing, and documentation. Agree how defects, shortages, substitutions, and changes will be handled before production. If the pilot succeeds, share forecasts and reorder plans so the supplier can reserve materials and capacity.
